MANITOBA CED NETWORK SUPPORTS NEW TAXI COOP
The Winnipeg Taxi Co-op is an excellent opportunity through which to create economic opportunities for drivers through a worker-ownership model in which they will equitably participate in the leadership, decision making, and profits of the company. And as worker-owners, they will be able to ensure that working conditions and employment benefits will be improved to adequately meet their needs and those of their families. This is extremely important, as there is overwhelming evidence to suggest that drivers are not made fully aware of their employment rights and are, in fact, often intentionally exploited as a result of their social and economic insecurity.
This is an excellent opportunity for the Taxicab Board to make a significant difference in the lives of many people who otherwise face many barriers in our city by supporting the Taxi Co-op, and at the same time enhance the critical cab services that are so important to many of our communities by increasing the number of licenses issued.

Read the letter to Gord Mackintosh (Minister of Family Services and
Housing) from the Right to Housing Coalition regarding the lack of
affordable housing for Manitobans:
Dear Mr. Mackintosh:
As you are aware, the Right to Housing Coalition is deeply
concerned with the lack of affordable housing for Manitobans. We are
particularly concerned with the lack of publicly owned and/or financed
units that provide households with safe and adequate housing with
rental rates set no higher than 30% of gross income.
We are pleased to see that the provincial government is now
acknowledging that we have a serious shortage of this supply and that
the existing supply is in dire need of repair. The recent announcement
that commitments made in 2007/2008 will result in 142 units with
supplements to reduce rents is encouraging. However, we would like to
remind the Minister that this number of units is insufficient and far
lower than the targets put forward by the Right to Housing Coalition. To read the entire letter click here>>

Fast Facts on Homelessness (CCPA)
A recent report by the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Adequate
Housing echoes what a growing number of Canadians already know. There
is a housing crisis in this country and governments are simply not
doing what is necessary to address it.
While this problem is nation- wide, it is particularly acute in
provinces like Manitoba. The housing crisis is too great and the
remedies too costly for the Manitoba government to address without a
significant long term commitment from the federal government. To read

BRANDON LABOUR SHORTAGE FAST FACTS
Less a Problem than an Opportunity
By Errol Black and Jim Silver
Fast food franchises in Brandon, the Winnipeg Free Press (Oct. 30,
2007) has reported, are offering prospective employees the chance to
win $1000 cash prizes, or even a new car, to work for them. Such
gimmicks are not the way to solve a labour shortage. Better to view the
problem as an opportunity---an opportunity to pull members of
low-income communities now under-represented in the paid labour force
into employment---and to pursue the opportunity systematically.

Judy honours the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives - Manitoba
office on its 10th anniversary of fighting for social justice
from Hansard, November 12, 2007
Ms. Judy Wasylycia-Leis (Winnipeg North, NDP): Mr. Speaker, I salute
the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives-Manitoba office, on its
10th anniversary.
Last night, Stephen Lewis topped off celebrations speaking to more
than 1,000 well wishers. For 10 years CCPA-Manitoba has been publishing
high quality research that has had a real impact on the lives of
people. It grew out of the work of professors Errol Black and Jim
Silver who together with Wayne Anthony initiated the project that
became CCPA-Manitoba in November 1997.
As an MP for the exact same time as this think tank has been in
existence I can testify how difficult it would be to do my job without
the work of CCPA and how central it is to the pursuit of social
justice. It was born at a crucial moment when consecutive Liberal and
Conservative federal governments put corporate tax cuts ahead of
community and equality rights.
Without the research of CCPA it would have been impossible to
counter the regressive agendas of health care privatization, housing
cutbacks and growing poverty. Through it the voices of the inner city
and aboriginal peoples have been included in the research of today.
I congratulate Shauna MacKinnon, Director and all members of the Manitoba CCPA
