1. Holiday Wishes

2. Strategic Planning – Your Input is Important!

With our current strategic plan coming to a close, CCEDNet’s Board has undertaken a new strategic planning process for 2012-2014. Over the coming months, we will be asking for members’ feedback on key issues with short on-line surveys. We promise to make these surveys quick and easy. Your input is vital to guiding CCEDNet’s future. Watch your email in-box for more information!

3. It’s Membership Renewal Time

Year end is also time for CCEDNet membership renewal. Current members will receive their renewal notices in the mail in the coming weeks. A strong and diverse membership is CCEDNet’s greatest strength, so please take a moment to renew your membership when you receive your notice.

4. Share the New Policy Priorities for CED in Canada

Last month, CCEDNet members received a copy of new policy priorities, which were also mailed to all 308 MPs. CCEDNet’s Policy Council is encouraging members to share this document within their own organization, and to use it in communications with officials at all three levels of government. Let us know what you think of this new presentation, and who you share it with by emailing Kirsten at kbernas@ccednet-rcdec.ca

5. Award Winning Members!

Anyone familiar with CCEDNet knows how innovative and dynamic our members are. A number of members have recently won awards for their fine work.

BUILD in Winnipeg won the $50,000 Scotiabank EcoLiving 2011 Business Leadership Award for a business providing eco-friendly products or services to the residential sector.

Nancy Hartling, from Support to Single Parents in Moncton, NB won the Governor General’s Persons Award for her outstanding contributions to advance equality for women in Canada.

Caroline Arcand of Groupe Convex in Eastern Ontario won one of the Trico Charitable Foundation’s 2011 Social Enterprize Awards. Potluck Café and Mission Possible from Vancouver were also winners. You can see a video of all the Social Enterprize winners on our YouTube Channel

6. Beyond Communications

7. Final CSEHub Webinars and E-books

The final webinar sessions were held by the Canadian Social Economy Hub at the end of November. The sessions on Community-University Partnerships, Public Policy, and a Thematic Analysis of social economy research can be viewed on the website of the Canadian Social Economy Hub. Three e-books on these topics will be published in the coming weeks – watch for more information on the website and in future newsletters.

8. Fair Trade and CED: What’s the Link?

CCEDNet’s International Committee is offering a series of webinars on themes that connect CED initiatives in Southern countries with Canada. Resources and recordings of past sessions on Fair Trade and CED, community forestry, microcredit, the co-construction of public policy and FIESS 2011, and food security and sovereignty are available on the International Committee pages of our website.

The next session will be on women’s economic empowerment on January 24, 2012, with subsequent sessions on cooperative development and sustainable tourism. Watch future bulletins for more information.

9. Dreaming of More Sun?

CCEDNet’s International webinars are supported by Uniterra, one of Canada’s largest volunteer placement programs. With placements from two weeks to two years, there are always opportunities to explore new cultures, share your expertise and support local organizations that are working actively to improve living conditions around the world. Current postings include a project co-ordinator for Mali’s Social Economy Network and a semi-industrial production Advisor in Burkina Faso.

11. The International Forum on the Social and Solidarity Economy

More than 1,600 participants from 62 countries took part in the International Forum on the Social and Solidarity Economy in Montréal last October.

The Forum produced a wealth of documents, presentations, videos and photos that are available on the website.

12. Fourth Canadian Conference on Social Enterprise

Congratulations to the Social Enterprise Council of Canada and the Atlantic Council for Community and Social Enterprise for the successful fourth Canadian Conference on Social Enterprise that was held in Halifax, November 20-22. The program included a wonderful keynote from Rankin MacSween, a strong endorsement for social enterprises from the Premier of Nova Scotia, a Social Enterprise Angels competition and intensive day-long and half-day training and policy sessions.

13. 2011 Manitoba CD/CED Gathering Another Success

More than 500 participants attended the 9th annual Manitoba CD/CED Gathering on October 21 in Winnipeg. This year, in addition to the wide range of workshops, helpful hints for building capacity and engaging your community, networking and connecting with people from a variety of sectors, participants enjoyed the Manitoba premier of the Economics of Happiness and a keynote address by Silver Donald Cameron.

14. Awards for Youth Homelessness and Financial Literacy Efforts

Eva’s Initiatives is offering four awards of $25,000 to organizations that are integrating supports to prevent and break the cycle of youth homelessness. The deadline for applications is January 20.

SEDI’s TD Financial Literacy Grant Fund recently announced the winners of its third round of funding for financial literacy projects. It is now accepting applications for its fourth round of grants -- the deadline is February 2, 2012

International Year of Co-operatives to be launched across Canada on January 12

Thousands of co-op and credit union members across Canada will be holding events on Thursday, January 12 to officially launch the United Nations International Year of Co-operatives. A national launch event will take place at Ottawa's National Arts Centre from 11:30 to 1:30 EST, together with 13 regional launch events. The Ottawa event will feature a live webcast starting at 12:30 EST. The webcast can be viewed here.

Participants across the country are also being encouraged to report on their events on Twitter using the hashtag #coop12jan.

Over the last 15 years, the fair trade market has grown exponentially. But in the context of continued globalization, is it actually changing economic systems and building sustainable livelihoods? Through an evaluation of fair trade for rural women knitters in Bolivia to the promotion of Fair Trade in Manitoba, and a new initiative to create a Canadian Fair Trade coalition, this webinar will assess the impacts of fair trade and its contribution to economic empowerment.

FIESS 2011: CED, the Social Economy and the World

Dear CCEDNet Members and Contacts,

Already close to 900 people are registered for what will likely be the largest event on community-based approaches to social and economic development ever held in Canada.

The International Forum on the Social and Solidarity Economy (FIESS) is coming to Montréal on October 17-20, 2011.

CCEDNet is a partner with the Chantier de l’économie sociale in the preparation of the Forum, which presents innovative practices from around the world in five themes:

- Local Development
- Finance and Market Access
- Innovation and Community Entrepreneurship
- Employment
- Food Security and Sovereignty

This is a unique opportunity to have such a diverse program of international best practices in Canada. Simultaneous translation in three languages (French, English, and Spanish) will facilitate direct learning between speakers and participants from 50 countries. Leading presenters from Europe, Australia and the U.S. will compare successes and challenges with Latin American, African and Asian colleagues. Yvon Poirier, Chair of CCEDNet’s International Committee, has prepared this brief introduction to three outstanding Asian examples that will be on the FIESS program.

In addition, pre-Forum sessions on Indigenous experiences, feminist perspectives, the latest research, a youth and cultural evening and 30 site visits will provide opportunities for participants to extend networking and learning.

In particular, CCEDNet members and staff will be involved in the local development theme, research sessions, and youth event.

The deadline for early-bird registration rates has been extended to July 22. To reduce costs, solidarity accommodation (billeting with Montréal residents) can be requested when you register.

Read 50 inspiring stories about CED in action across Manitoba

Our Manitoba office has launched its Profiles of CED in Manitoba project. So far we've completed 35 (of 50) stories of communities working to build fairer and stronger local economies, reduce poverty, and revitalize neighbourhoods. Not all of the initiatives use a fully comprehensive CED approach, but each represents an important component of a CED solution.

The project includes stories on a wide range of organizations and businesses; everything from hardware stores to daycares, energy co-ops to local training centres. Learn how they started, the challenges they faced, the positive changes they are making in their communities.

1. AGM and Board Election Results

The 2011 Annual General Meeting was held on June 7 at the offices of the Learning Enrichment Foundation, the evening prior to the Ontario CED Conference. This was the first time an AGM has been hosted by a member – thanks to Peter Frampton and the LEF team for the warm welcome.

This was also the first year that the AGM was broadcast via webinar, a practice we hope to continue in the future.

Congratulations to Michael Farris, Diana Jedig and Carol Madsen who were elected to the Board of Directors for 3-year terms, and thank you to all the candidates who stood for election. CCEDNet’s President, Caroline Lachance, also expressed special gratitude to outgoing Board members Natasha Jackson, Roz Lockyer, Stacia Kean and Brad Franck.

2. Manitoba Regional Governance Committee Members Elected

Last fall, CCEDNet’s Board put in place a framework allowing for the formal creation of regional committees.

Following up to the provincial policy forum held last fall, our Manitoba members met again at the end of April for a 2011 Spring Member Meeting, and in May elected nine members to the new Manitoba Regional Committee. Congratulations to:

3. Regional Conferences Successful

This spring, CCEDNet partnered with member organizations to hold regional conferences in Vancouver, Northwest BC, Saskatoon and Toronto. Altogether, nearly 500 people participated in the conferences and numerous related events.

6. Research Partnerships Assessment Tool

CCEDNet’s Research Advisory Committee has prepared an assessment tool that asks key questions designed to help community organizations as they consider participating in a research partnership. 8. International Forum on the Social and Solidarity Economy Early Bird Registration Deadline Extended

Although over 550 people from almost 50 countries have now registered for the Forum, organizers have extended the early-bird registration deadline to July 22nd.

With a thousand people expected, this will be the biggest Canadian event ever looking at community-based solutions to the social, economic and environmental challenges of the 21st century.

The Forum will be October 17-20 in Montréal. Registration for community groups before July 22 is $350, but after it increases to $500.

9. Canadian Conference on Social Enterprise

The fourth Canadian Conference on Social Enteprise will be held in Halifax, November 20-22. The program will include intensive day-long and half-day training sessions on topics such as introduction to social enterprise, demonstrating value, governance for social enterprise, business planning skills, marketing, financial analysis, social enterprise franchising, supporting and building social enterprise in Canada.

Registration is expected to open in late July.

10. Contextualizing the Scope and Factors Associated with Evaluating the Impact of the Social Economy

Jorge Sousa of the University of Alberta and J.J. McMurtry of York University are investigating measurement tools used within the social economy and the ways that social economy organizations evaluate their impact. This is vital to better understanding the strengths and limitations of social economic approaches to community issues.

Practitioners, academics, policy makers and "clients" of social economy organizations are invited to complete a survey that seeks to understand how each group values and conceptualizes measurement both within their organization and within the social economy as a whole.

11. Socialfinance.ca Launches Your Guide to Social Finance

At the end of May, socialfinance.ca launched Your Guide to Social Finance, a guide for social entrepreneurs and those interested in social ventures who are considering how social finance can support the opening, operation and expansion of enterprises that have a positive social and/or environmental impact.

Using stories, digital videos and interviews, the Guide takes you through five key questions: the what, why, who and most importantly the how of social finance in Canada and beyond.
