Workshop Descriptions

Community Engagement and Planning: Tools, Techniques, Challenges

March 10 - 1pm to 4pm - United Way Learning Centre, 580 Main St

Planning can help groups of people and neighbourhoods create a vision for the future and a roadmap for achieving that vision. There are, however, many challenges to community and people-centred approaches to development planning. Various planning tools and approaches can help mitigate conflict and maximize opportunities to build a common vision and collaborative partnerships, which leads to successful community development. This workshop will explore different engagement and participatory planning strategies, and consider ways to deal with some of the most likely challenges in the process.

Facilitator 1: Karin Kliewer
Karin has a Master’s degree in City Planning and undergraduate degrees in Conflict Resolution and International Development. Her graduate studies thesis focused on power dynamics in planning and how community groups have collaborated to influence decision-makers. Since then she has helped organize and facilitate consultations in rural Manitoba, and put together a planning resource with the Canadian CED Network. Karin's current work with the Winnipeg Poverty Reduction Council is helping her put collaborative principles into action. Karin has been living, volunteering and working in Winnipeg for the last decade and has gained experience in research, community engagement, facilitation, event planning, and evaluation.

Facilitator 2: Brendan Reimer
Brendan Reimer is the Prairies Regional Coordinator for the Canadian CED Network, a member of the Social Enterprise Council of Canada, and a board member of the Manitoba Federation of Non Profit Organizations. Brendan has worked in non-profit management and leadership for nearly 20 years, and is currently teaching “Non Profit Management” at the University of Winnipeg’s Faculty of Business and Economics.

Effective Fundraising

March 24 - Full Day 9am to 4pm - United Way Learning Centre, 580 Main St

For today’s community organizations and smaller nonprofits, the challenge of fundraising is a constant part of daily life.  What your nonprofit does--your programs--is the highest priority for any nonprofit manager. Fundraising is the second.  But how do you manage both and keep it balanced?

This workshop will be highly interactive – in other words – bring your challenges, your joys, your issues and your questions.  We will walk through the principles of effective fund development and cover topics such as:
  • Building a convincing case for financial support
  • Selecting the donors and markets best suited to your nonprofit
  • Choosing the right fundraising vehicles for your organization
  • Inspiring the leadership potential of volunteers
  • Creating a fundraising process that works, but is attainable with limited resources
  • Fundraising trends
  • Understanding the Fundraising Cycle

Facilitator: Sue Barkman
Sue Barkman (MBA, CFRE) has held numerous senior development and business consulting positions for the past 25 years. Sue has over 20 years of fundraising experience at several levels with health, social service and educational organizations in Toronto and Winnipeg.  She has been an instructor at Sheridan College, Brock University, U of Toronto and the Banff Centre in fundraising management and studied at the Fundraising School of Philanthropy in Indianapolis, Indiana. She is originally from Steinbach, Manitoba and is currently the Director of Development, Community Relations and Government Relations with the International Institute for Sustainable Development in Winnipeg.

Sue also volunteers through the Canadian CED Network’s Spark service with Local Investment Towards Employment (LITE) and the West Centre Women’s Resource Centre in Winnipeg.
